2012 Toy Fair: Hasbro & Star Trek Update

by Jay Cochran
February 11, 2012
Earlier this week, Hasbro announced during their investor day event that they would be doing Kre-O sets based on the Star Trek license for 2013 and that they would be focusing primarily on the new movie coming from J.J. Abrams. They also put out a press release which caused a lot of confusion, leading many to believe a full line of toys and action figures would be forthcoming from Hasbro. It was this line from the press release that caused people to think action figures:

"Hasbro will also offer robust line of role-play toys for kids and fans to act out the intergalactic saga as well as select new figures."

So while at the Hasbro showroom today for the New York Toy Fair, I did some digging to see if I could find out what was going on. Would Hasbro be doing a full line of figures and vehicles for Trek fans??? Well I will admit I wasn't able to get the entire picture, and it is still a little confusing to me what we will actually see from Hasbro for Trek in 2013. This is what I found out: Hasbro has gotten the license for all Star Trek, not just the new movies. However I was told not to expect collector-oriented product to be forthcoming from the company. What exactly that means I am not sure, but it sure doesn't sound like we should be expecting realistic 3.75" or 6" lines from Hasbro.

Playmates did confirm for us they were done with the Trek license for now. I am pretty sure Diamond Select still has the ability to make 6" figures and vehicles as well as Minimates based on Classic Star Trek even though they aren't doing too much with it right now.

I know this doesn't clear up a lot and since Hasbro won't be doing anything with Star Trek till 2013, we probably have some time to go before more details are revealed, but based on what I was told today I won't be holding my breath for any kind of collector-oriented figures from Hasbro anytime soon for Star Trek.
