Paramount+ today debuted the official trailer for the highly anticipated second season of its critically acclaimed original series STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS. The second season will also be available to stream on Paramount+ in South Korea, with the premiere date to be announced at a later time. Additionally, the trailer revealed a first look at the previously announced special crossover episode featuring STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS' Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner and Jack Quaid as Brad Boimler in live-action form aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. The episode, featuring animation, was directed by "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and STAR TREK: PICARD actor and director Jonathan Frakes.
In season two of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, confronts increasingly dangerous stakes, explores uncharted territories, and encounters new life and civilizations. The crew will also embark on personal journeys that will continue to test their resolve and redefine their destinies. Facing new and familiar friends and enemies, their adventures will unfold in surprising ways never seen before on any "Star Trek" series.
The series stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'An Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga. Season two also features the return of special guest star Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk and new addition Carol Kane in a recurring role as Pelia.
Season two of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners. Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.
So I havent watched either show, but I am curious how are they planning to do a cartoon/l live action crossover? Are the cartoon characters just being portrayed as live action?
Presumably the in-universe justification is time-travel. As for out of universe, as shown in the picture included in the article, they're having the Lower Decks characters' voice actors play them in live-action.

Not that I don't like the actor - he's perfectly fine and I'm sure he's a great guy - but I just don't get the Kirk 'vibe' from him, you know? Chris Pine's version had his own brand of it, and Shatner originated the swagger, but I just don't get that feel from him. Not in the last episode, anyway - maybe he'll develop it as the season goes on.
That's why I don't like him, but it's nothing personal, and I probably should have chosen slightly different words. I don't like him as Kirk.

I'm pretty sure they are re-writing everything.
Apparently the Klingons never look human-like or ever try augmenting themselves
I'm having trouble finding it now, but I read that all three Klingon looks would appear on SNW this season.

I don't like the actor they have playing Kirk, and I don't know how I feel about him coming aboard the Enterprise. I guess as long as he and Pike don't meet yet (they aren't supposed to until Kirk takes command upon Pike's promotion to fleet captain) there's no real issue there. Although the writers already seem to have forgotten last season that Pike doesn't get maimed until after he's promoted and no longer captain of the Enterprise, so, who the hell knows what they'll do?
