Earlier this week,
NECA sent out a
polite but firm email asking collectors to return any extra
TMNT Donatello’s Lab sets they’d mistakenly received. Naturally,
chaos ensued, and local collector
Ryan aka '
Flipper McFlipface' has found himself in a sticky situation. Back in August,
NECA accidentally shipped double the orders of their
Donatello’s Lab diorama set to a handful of lucky (
or unlucky?) collectors. While many decided to keep it for themselves, others "
accidentally" listed theirs online for massive profits. Ryan was one of the latter.
ToyFarce investigated...
"
I swear, it was an accident!" Ryan claimed, wiping sweat off his brow during our exclusive interview. "
One minute, I was admiring my extra Donatello's Lab, thinking, 'What a neat display for my vintage TMNT collection this would be!' and the next thing I know, it's on eBay with a 'Buy It Now' price of $499.99. I have no idea how this happened!"
The diorama sold in minutes, earning Ryan a hefty profit that he promptly reinvested in...
more action figures, of course. "
I thought that was the end of it! I mean, what are the chances NECA would actually ask for it back months later? I thought NECA was cool with it!" said Ryan, visibly panicking. "
I love their stuff, but now I feel like they’re gonna blacklist me! What do I do? Should I buy another Donatello’s Lab on the secondary market to send back to them? Those are going for crazy prices right now! Trust me, I know..."
Other collectors in similar predicaments have taken to social media to share their woes. One wrote, "
Oops, I sold mine too! Can we just pretend this email went directly to spam?". Another joked: "
I kept mine, but I've opened it and displayed it this whole time. Should I leave the dust on it, free of charge?"
Meanwhile,
NECA has remained professional in their follow-ups: "
We appreciate our fans and their honesty", a company representative said. "
If you received an extra TMNT Donatello’s Lab, we’d like it returned so we can fulfill orders for other collectors". Because as we all know, if there is one thing that toy collectors love to do, it's helping other toy collectors,
right? (
as long as they pay a 'time and energy' tax + PayPal fees, of course...).
The "infamous" email

Next time you receive an extra item in error, remember: it's not a bonus for being awesome, it's just an unexpected error in the shipping system.

Can we officially announce this as the sequel movie? "The Return of the Product - Double Lab Trouble" would be a catchy name.

and now saying they will also charge them for the extra one that was sent, which is illegal. just a bad situation for NECA, just gotta hope some good people send it back and if not eat the loss and move on.
It's actually illegal for them to threaten to charge customers for something sent in error. It is in fact illegal to even send unordered merchandise in the first place.https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=granuleid%3AUSC-prelim-title39-section3009&edition=prelimThey can ask for it to be returned, but it's totally up to the recipient and they absoultely cannot charge.
"Should I leave the dust on it, free of charge?"
That line got me, lol.
