ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the first wave of
Invincible figures from
Diamond Select Toys.
Invincible is an amazing comic book by
Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) that started nearly two decades ago (2003, I feel old), but also a great
animated series on
Amazon Prime. The first season came out in early 2021, and we are still waiting for an update about when season 2 will air.
Diamond Select Toys decided to base the figures on the animated series, which is... a choice, considering animation and design were not the strongest points of the show. That means we'll get simplified versions of the awesome art from the comic book by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. Oh well...
First, the main character: Mark Grayson, Invincible himself. The figure comes with an angry headsculpt, extra hands, a baseball glove, a baseball, a baseball with effect, a piece of rubble and a stand.
The figure looks rather mid, I'm not gonna lie. The colors are kind of dull, I would have loved brighter colors, or even darker yellow. The skin tone is also a bit off. It's very simple, the articulations are okay-ish. The flight stand is an absolute piece of trash, also. It barely holds the figure up and falls down in pieces when you try to move it a little. I did not have a great experience with the flight stand AT ALL.
Also, the figure has flat hands to put him in a flying pose...but the figure cannot look up. So he will fly in a very awkward position, looking down. Yay!
Omni-man, Mark's father, on the other hand, is a pretty decent figure. The figure comes with an angry headsculpt as well, a few extra hands, a baseball glove and a non articulated flight stand, for some reason. Omni-man is an incredible character, who starts in the comic book as a great father and mentor to Invincible until it is revealed that he is a huge villain, a vitrumite from another planet who was sent to conquer earth. There's so much more happening in the comic book with this character, but if you watch the first episode of the animated series until the very end, you'll figure it out.
The figure has limited articulation as well, the cape is quite hard, but the paint and headsculpt are way better on this one. Unfortunately, he suffers from the same issue as Invincible, where he has hands for a flying pose, while he cannot look up. *sigh*
The non-articulated flight stand is very useful also, as it allows you to make him levitate a whole quarter of a inch (1mm) above the ground!
So, yeah... these are not amazing figures, just okay. They look good together in a static pose, but you won't be able to get them in crazy poses. But since there were only a couple other figures available for that franchise up to now (Invincible and Atom Eve from McFarlane Toys, distributed by Skybound, in normal and bloody versions), we'll make do with what we have for now!
Close enough?
A second wave was already announced with Atom Eve and Robot. Robot looks pretty great, thanks to his simple design, but Atom Eve... not so much. We'll see when they'll be released later this year.
