In a surprising turn of events that has the toy collecting community
buzzing, an avid collector has come to a
groundbreaking realization that he enjoys the
thrill of pre-ordering and anticipating action figures far more than actually owning them.
ToyFarce investigated...
Dave, a 39-year-old accountant from
New Jersey, has been an enthusiastic collector of action figures for a few decades. His collection, spanning multiple shelves and display cases, boasts everything from vintage
Star Wars figures to the latest
Marvel Legends. But recently, Dave has discovered a curious pattern in his collecting habits:
"
I'd place a pre-order for a new figure and be really excited." Dave explained. "
The excitement of waiting for the release date, checking my email for shipping notifications, and tracking the package was just exhilarating. Checking online for other people telling they have received it, looking for the first pictures (usually taken with a potato camera, #callback),...
It's all part of the fun! But once the figure arrived and I unboxed it... I don't know, the magic seemed to disappear."
Dave's epiphany struck him last week when he found himself scrolling through pre-orders on his favorite toy retailer's website (
Hint: It's a toy store that is BIG and also BAD). He realized that his collection was filled with unopened boxes and figures that he had excitedly awaited but barely touched since their arrival.
"
There's something about the anticipation that makes the hobby so thrilling." Dave continued. "
It's like a kid waiting for Christmas morning, but once Christmas is over, you're just left with the toys! The chase, the wait, the buildup – that's where the real joy is for me!"
Dave's revelation has sparked a
lively debate among collectors. Some agree, sharing similar experiences of post-purchase letdown, while others insist that the true joy of collecting lies in the figures themselves, proudly displayed and meticulously posed. Despite his newfound understanding, Dave shows no signs of slowing down his pre-ordering habits.

This is essentially the case for me. I love displaying my figures in my office, but I honestly love going store-hopping and attempting to hunt down figures I want or might want even more. I think it drives my wife crazy because anytime we are in proximity of a Walmart or Target I tell her we need to go there because I need to check something real quick. I kind of look at owning the figures as the trophy of the hunt, signifying whether the hunt was successful or not. Sadly I have many hunts that I dont bring home any trophies haha.

I would definitely ask Steve from Accounting - what's his opinion on this topic.Otherwise, it's so true. I felt it, and mostly it's just an empty feeling of waiting for something - and when it becomes a reality, all the sparkling vanishes. It something has to do with the sheer amount of releases nowadays, bc if you say it's plenty or overwhelming to sort out all the information, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
I've definitely experienced this..

Totally true. That's why so many addicts call it the thrill of the hunt. It's the dopamine rush they get from the chase. Once it's acquired, they move on to the next thing. That's why you also hear things like "new toy smell" or "new toy vision". You become enamored with a new figure, but that love fades when the next new figure arrives. Sometimes I wonder if this is the same with people who can't commit to a relationship and that, those people aren't necessarily bad people, but addicts to the chase.
This is no farce! It's real! After years of collecting but not displaying my figs, I'm realizing, as I begin to get some out and set them up, I have far more than I can display and that it's a lot of WORK. Yikes!!
