We are 5 weeks deep in the
Target Fall Geek-Out event, and after years of seeing their drops revealed weeks,
sometimes months in advance by
Target, several toy brands have decided to reveal their upcoming event collectibles
themselves in advance this year.
Why, you ask? Because
Target cannot be trusted.
ToyFarce investigated...
Over the past few years, collectors have grown accustomed to seeing the highly anticipated
Target Geek-Out collectibles on shelves long before they were even announced.
Target employees, either
unaware or
unbothered by the sanctity of toy reveals, have been unintentionally leaking all the prized goods. But this year, several brands, like
NECA or
Hasbro weren't having any of it.
"
If anyone is going to ruin the fun, it might as well be us" said a spokesperson from
NECA, before unveiling their upcoming
Ultimate 'Totally 80s' Alf,
Ultimate Gorilla Soldier from the
Planet of the Apes,
Ultimate Nosferatu Count Orlok (black and white version) and
Ultimate M3GAN figures for this year's event. Collectors assumed that they would be available the following week of the
Fall Geek-Out event, but it ended up being something else, and we are still waiting for those to show up (
probably next week, since it's the last...).
"
Every year, our new, exciting items are revealed/spoiled a month too early by a random Instagram post from a toy collector in Ohio (it's always Ohio...),
because Target accidentally put all the products out on the shelves way before the official date", another toy company spokesperson added. "
We decided that we would be the one revealing it this year."
Rumors are already swirling that this new "
self-spoiling" strategy might extend, as several toy brands have decided they might reveal next year's items already, and maybe sell them directly themselves too, because the only way to keep
Target from spoiling the fun might be to just
leave them out of it entirely. In the meantime,
Target employees can rest easy and continue to put
Halloween products out on the shelves in
mid-July.
