"Wait… who won?" This past Sunday, while millions of people were glued to their screens watching the
Super Bowl, a group of toy collectors gathered for what was supposed to be a fun-filled game night, only to realize, hours later, that they had completely
forgotten to watch the actual game.
ToyFarce investigated.
The party, hosted by collector and self-proclaimed "
sports fan"
Mike M., started like any other
Super Bowl gathering, with plenty of
snacks,
drinks, and a giant TV tuned to the game. However, things quickly took a turn when someone casually mentioned the latest pictures of
Mezco's booth from this weekend's
MegaCon in
Orlando,
Florida. What followed was a
five-hour conversation on upcoming toy reveals, pre-order frustrations, and whether or not action figure companies should go back to plastic window packaging.
"
At first, we were just casually talking while waiting for the kickoff" said Greg. "
But then someone brought up the new upcoming Hasbro Marvel Legends Maximum Series Spider-Man figure, and that led to a whole debate about the price, and about articulation versus sculpt. Next thing we knew, halftime had come and gone, and we hadn't looked at the screen once."
Attendees recounted that the conversations spiraled further, covering everything from
NECA's sudden surprise figure drops at
Best Buy (callback!) to whether
Super7’s
Ultimates were worth the price. A heated discussion about
MAFEX versus
S.H. Figuarts even led to someone angrily storming off, only to return moments later with a few of his import figures as "
evidence".
When asked about the halftime show, one guest shrugged: "
Oh yeah, Kendrick Lamar was performing, right? I think I saw him on a reflection on a Detolf glass cabinet door..."
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, someone finally asked: "
Wait, is the game still on?". But at that point, it was too late: no one even knew what the score was. The final realization hit when one of the collectors checked his phone and casually mentioned that the
Super Bowl had ended 30 minutes ago.

Plans for next year’s "Super Toy Bowl" are already in motion, but organizers say they may not even bother turning the game on.
